Postcards :)

I was looking into buying some postcards on Amazon (I just found out they sell postcards!), because most of mine are of Georgia/Atlanta, with some random postcards from my mom and Connie. I mentioned it to my mom, and she pulled out a stack of art postcard books! She said that she had gotten them for my sister and I when we were little, to play a matching game with, so she had two of each book! She gave me half, and kept the rest for herself.
Degas is one of my favorite artists! So I am really excited about all these new postcards! 36 of them! Well, 34, because my sister took a couple.

I also got a postcard the other day from Christy in Port Neches, Texas. She said it is an early effort at a handmade postcard. I think it came out great!
I would like to make some postcards, but I'm never sure what kind of paper to use. Cardstock seems to flimsy, especially to go out of the country, but the only thing thicker that we have is cardboard. Any suggestions?

  1. I know you can buy plain white crafting postcards on eBay but you'd have to check the material they're made from, I've never looked into it myself, I've only seen them listed when I'm searching for bulk postcards. Hope that helps!

  3. If you ever order sheets of stamps from the USPS website, they come with nice thick (but not too thick!) pieces of cardboard. You could also try gluing two pieces of cardstock together, or gluing a piece of decorated cardstock to the cardboard on a cereal box.

  4. You can get blank postcards in the scrapbooking/cardmaking section of Hobby Lobby. :)

  5. i used to love those little art postcard books! whenever i went to a gallery gift shop, i would buy one :)

in my shoppe i sell post cards/flat cards and i use 120 lbs cardstock which is definitely harder to find but seems to hold up. you're right though, most cardstock is too thin...

speaking of making things...i'm having a mail art contest on my blog - feel free to check it out :)

  6. SaskiaHamilton and Jenny- Thanks! I will check out both of those!

deltiolog- The idea of gluing 2 pieces of cardstock together has crossed my mind, but I wasn't sure if they would end up coming apart... I'll have to try it though.

patience- Recently when we've gone to museums (I guess it was really only once...) I look for postcards in the gift shop, but I haven't seen any! I will look into the 120lb cardstock, too! If I have time, I definitely will send some mailart your way!

Thank you guys so much for the suggestions!

  7. Olivia, in Barcelona (I live here) there is a terrific book market on Sundays where sometimes they sell special and old postcards. If I find some beautiful one, I'll send it you with my letter! ;)

Ps.: In some photography shop on-line you can do some postcards with the image that you want. Maybe there you can check what kind of paper are made of ;)

    1. That book market sounds really cool! Thanks :) I've been wanting to go to a local flea market (I don't know if you have them in Spain. They're a type of bazaar selling cheap or secondhand items, according to Wikipedia) to look for postcards, but haven't gotten around to it yet. I'm not sure if they sell that type of thing there though.

  8. Oh, wow! I looked at the cover of American Artist today and I had to swallow real hard. "Degas VS Renoir!" Then I discover your blog hours later. Talk about a happy face. :) Your mom sounds sweet. I've begun a match game with my youngest pen friend. We'll be matching upper and lower case alphabets. I'm sending him one a week for a year. Then he will have 52 cards, and hopefully he'll learn a whole lot.

    I like Christy's style. She's talented. Wonder if she's a tagger? ;)

    Lovely blog you have. :)

    1. :) Your alphabet matching game sounds fun! I'm sure he will learn a lot.

I like Christy's style too. For saying that it's only an early attempt, it looks really good! The back even looks really nice! What do you mean by a tagger?

      Thanks for looking :)
